In recent years, the use of the Cloud has increased enormously. It is used by both companies and individuals. Despite the growth and opportunities offered by working in the cloud, there have always been objections to it and reasons for companies not to make use of it. And to think that we often make frequent use of cloud services in our private lives. Just think of your e-mail and internet banking. But from a business point of view, it sometimes seems like a higher threshold. Are these objections to the Cloud justified? We explain it!

The Cloud

Cloud computing is characterized by efficiency, maximum availability, minimal management and mobility. Nowadays we see many trends appearing as flex-working and paperless companies. The use of the Cloud fits in well with these trends because the documents used by the employees are available at all locations. The increased efficiency can be explained by the central location of all documents, as there is no need to search for specific documents. Scalability is also an advantage for companies. There is no more lack of storage space or lack of computing power. By using the Cloud, additional servers can always be deployed to meet demand. Consider the advantage of management. Updates and upgrades are performed remotely. The company’s own ICT department no longer has to worry about it. Simply log in via a web browser, wherever and whenever you want to work. Although the Cloud is gaining more and more ground and Archive-IT is also noticing that the objections among companies are becoming fewer and fewer, those objections to the Cloud still exist. Why? The two main reasons are security and costs.

Safety

There are companies that are hesitant to take the step to the Cloud when it comes to highly privacy-sensitive and business-critical information. A major objection to the Cloud is security because you hand over control of access to confidential documents and data to a third party. This is a feeling. Fear of handing over control. It is no longer tangible. Yet this fear is often unjustified. MUST you choose the right supplier. Therefore, when choosing a supplier, take a good look at the measures that are taken to secure the application. Check the certifications they have. Think of ISO 27001 for information security. But also check with the Data Protection Officer who has appointed the supplier. In addition, in the case of important information, it is not a superfluous step to audit the supplier and actually experience how your privacy-sensitive data is handled.

The costs

In addition to safety, entrepreneurs are also concerned about the costs. However, this is a major advantage of the Cloud. The servers and software can be deployed. The costs are only dependent on the use. IT personnel and knowledge can be reduced, and finally, cheap, simple PCs and laptops are sufficient as a gateway to the applications. In a study by the University of Berkeley, it was claimed that cloud services would be five times cheaper than regular variants.

All in all, we conclude that working in the Cloud is certainly worthwhile and that the objections that exist are unjustified. Nevertheless, it is important to be careful and not just trust all Cloud services. Measuring is knowing, and that also applies to choosing a Cloud Service.
